The Sustainable Aquaculture in Mangrove Ecosystem (SAIME) model is a major breakthrough in coastal conservation and community survival. Developed by the Nature Environment and Wildlife Society (NEWS) alongside international partners like the Global Nature Fund, this community-based initiative has even earned Global Technical Recognition from the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).

Traditional, chemical-heavy shrimp farming has historically been a primary driver of mangrove deforestation in the Sundarbans. SAIME completely flips that script by proving that ecology and local economy can thrive together.

SAIME Model: SAIME Model is a community-based initiative in the Mangroves of Sundarbans in the state of West-Bengal.  The main aims of the initiative are to create an equilibrium between mangrove conservation and creation of aquaculture – based livelihood for locals. The salient features of these initiatives are:

  • Reservation of 5-30% of aquaculture pond areas for mangrove conservation, protecting this created ecosystem while supporting fish and shrimp farming.
  • Farmers are permitted to use mangrove litter as a natural fodder for the Black Tiger Shrimp (Penaeus monodon), a highly value3d species traditionally farmed in the region, thereby reducing dependence on chemical inputs.
  • The model promotes climate-adaptive aquaculture, helping farmers increase profits and strengthen coastal resilience against seal level rise and erosion.

How the SAIME Model Works?

The project shifts aquaculture from destructive monoculture to Integrated Mangrove Aquaculture (IMA). Instead of clearing trees to build open mud ponds, farmers seamlessly weave the ecosystem into their infrastructure.

  • Pond Integration: Participating farmers commit to maintaining between 5% and 30% mangrove cover directly inside their pond areas and along the embankments.
  • Natural Fodder & Zero Chemicals: Farmers primarily cultivate native Black Tiger Shrimp (Penaeus monodon). Instead of buying expensive artificial feeds or chemical additives, the system relies on tidal water exchange. The falling leaves and organic litter from the integrated mangroves act as natural fodder, enriching the water with local nutrients.
  • Ecosystem Roots: By planting native species (such as Avicennia, Rhizophora, and Bruguiera), the extensive root networks naturally stabilize the pond dykes against the intense erosion common in the delta.

Direct Impact: People & Planet

The beauty of SAIME is that it addresses the daily financial necessity of the Sundarbans community while building environmental defense lines.

(i). Tripling Financial Sustainability

Because the model eliminates the need for commercial feed, antibiotics, and synthetic fertilizers, input production costs drop drastically. On average, participating smallholder farmers have seen their annual net profits double compared to conventional aquaculture methods.

(ii). Women-Led Grassroots Governance

The social layout of the initiative heavily drives equity. Women’s self-help groups and cooperatives manage the specialized mangrove nurseries that cultivate the seedlings. This ensures local resource management, direct cash flow to women in marginalized coastal groups, and fair, equal pay.

Climate Adaptation & Blue Carbon

The Sundarbans face severe climate threats, including rising sea levels and intense cyclones. The integrated mangroves act as:

  • A Climate-adaptive Approach: The SAIME approach is acclimate-adaptive, addressing the threat of sea-level rise and salinity intrusion in deltaic Sunder ban.
  • Mangroves as Natural Sink: integrated into ponds act as natural carbon sinks, adding carbon sequestration and mitigating the local climate impacts.
  •  Meeting Global sustainable Goal: The model directly contributes to global climate goals under the FAO’S sustainable food system and ecosystem restoration frame works.
  • A Natural Shield: They act as a natural shield against storms, tsunamis, and erosion   and absorbing wave energy to protect low-lying islands from storm surges.
  • Blue Carbon Sinks: Sequestering atmospheric carbon deep into the saline, low-oxygen soils where decomposition is exceptionally slow.
  • Bio-diversity Hot spot:  Home to over 5700 species in India, mangroves are vital for ecological balance. Mangroves support global fisheries.,

The Takeaway: SAIME changes the dialogue from a choice between saving nature and feeding families to an understanding that feeding families sustainably requires a healthy ecosystem. It stands as a highly scalable blueprint for the global tropical coastline.
